Are we too dependent on Microsoft?

In light of the recent CrowdStrike incident that caused major disruptions to systems worldwide using Microsoft software, Professor Justin Cappos discussed the potential global overreliance on Microsoft. He specifically addressed the privileged access CrowdStrike has to Microsoft's "kernel," highlighting the security implications of such access. “The kernel is the most trusted part of the operating system,” said Cappos. “It lets things like your other programs actually run, and isolates them from each other. When something goes wrong there, it doesn’t have anything to do other than stop in most cases.”
