Can you grow a building?
Assistant Professor Elizabeth Hénaff and Phoebe Mankiewicz Ledins of Yale University discuss building microbiomes — the communities of microorganisms in built environments. Through green walls and varied growth media, they research how to improve indoor air quality and increase microbial diversity. "The diversity of a microbiome is going to be related to the diversity of the ecosystem that it's part of," Hénaff explains, asking "how can we make a building actually feel like a forest?" Their work shows different growth media support diverse microbiomes that could benefit human health.
