Could you make a microchip? How NYU is using AI and education to democratize chip design

As President Biden signed the $280 billion CHIPS Act in August 2022, Institute Professor Siddharth Garg was already at work to transform the semiconductor industry. He identified a critical gap: a shortage of domestic chip design talent due to historical neglect. "Now, with the CHIPS Act… there’s so much potential," Garg states, envisioning diverse professionals creating custom semiconductors. His initiatives, including the NSF-funded Chips4Al and BASICS programs, and the innovative "Chip Chat" project, aim to democratize chip design education and foster innovation across the field.
