A former facebook executive pushes to open social media’s ‘Black Boxes’
The co-founder of CrowdTangle has been working with Congress on legislation to make tech companies disclose their inner workings; these efforts were driven in part by the frustration of researchers at how hard it is to even define the problems posed by social platforms. Laura Edelson, current Ph.D. student, co-founder of Cybersecurity for Democracy, and member of NYU Center for Cybersecurity, has previously researched misinformation in social media platforms, finding a “very high false positive rate for content being flagged” within Facebook, and says the new legislation would be a “game changer.”
