Critics warn that the increased focus on AI chatbots’ supposed sentience is a distraction from more serious and immediate dangers of the developing technology. Associate Professor Brendan Dolan-Gavitt, affiliated with NYU Tandon's Center for Cybersecurity, stated that these chatbots are a “statistical learning machine,” not people’s new pen pals. “At the moment, we don’t really have any indication that the AI has an ‘inner experience,’ or a personality.”
