Scientists discover concerning new source of ‘forever chemicals’ in drinking water
Even with advanced treatment, wastewater plants are releasing "forever chemicals" (PFAS) into drinking water sources, potentially affecting 23 million Americans. These chemicals, largely from pharmaceuticals, resist breakdown and pose health risks. Climate change-driven drought could worsen the situation by reducing dilution. "We're identifying really large amounts of chemicals that we know very little about," says incoming assistant professor Bridger Ruyle, who led the research team that made the discovery.
