How water flows inside a sea sponge
An international research team co-led by Institute Professor Maurizio Porfiri found that not only is the deep-sea Venus flower basket sponge’s delicate-seeming structure able to withstand the harsh deep sea conditions of its habitat - itself a marvel of natural engineering – but it is able to filter feed using only the faint ambient currents of the ocean depths, no pumping required.
